St Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc’s popularity stemmed from her great deeds of Valor. She helped bring the seemingly endless war by firmly maintaining that the French army should fight to win and turn the war to a play. Her call was heeded, bringing normalcy and peace to a war torn kingdom. Joan of Arc urged the army to handle captured enemies with mercy.
She’s the Third most popular subject in western culture after Jesus Christ and Napoleon! Since her demise Joan of Arc her spirit of bravery has inspired men and women throughout the world to fight for the freedom of their respective countries. Florence Nightingale drew her inspiration to nurse wounded soldiers from this great lady. Other people she influenced included Churchill, General De Gaulle, Annie Oakley, Mark Twain and many others.

The history of St Joan of Arc

Joan was born in a village in duchy of bar later renamed Domremy-la-Pucelle to Jacques d’Arc and Isabelle Romee. Her father worked on their 50 acre of land that was on an isolated patch of north-eastern territory. He also worked as a village official where he collected taxes and headed the local watch. Although her village was surrounded by Burgundian lands it remained loyal to French crown. Joan was born about 1412. During her trial she estimated her age to  be about 19. She claimed to have experienced her first vision in 1424 when she was 12 years old. When she was on the field alone, she testified, she heard beautiful voices that left her crying after they had subsided. J
oan was instructed to drive the English and in turn bring Dauphin to Reims for his coronation, by St. Micheal, St. Catherine and St. Margaret. In 1928 Joan requested her relative, Durand Lassois to take her to petition the garrison commander for permission to pay a visit to the royal French court at Chinon. Baudricourt was repulsed by her suggestion but this was not to deter her. She was to return the next January after gaining support from two men of note: Jean de Metz and Bertrand de Poulengy.

The resultant interview was spot on after she made a startling prediction about a military reversal near Orleans. Joan was to lead the French army and was the first woman to wear warrior attire. She led France to victory against the English. Unlike other generals before her she led her army in the battlefield from the front. This lifted the morale of the army with stories abounding on how she was able to dodge enemy attacks. When she was captured by the Burgundy’s, England ally, she was not under the aegis of God. With their morale high the French were able to drive the English out of their territory. France would have been a British territory if it were not for Joan.  Joan was found guilty of treason and subsequently killed.
